Why do we count down

For a moment, I do not quite understand the meaning and porpose of "count down"!
Is it for celebrating a new year's coming?
In Chinese New Year, we waited for the midnight it's all because there was a say about the monster coming and eating all that's asleep.
Yet, some peole nowaday call it "wait for the age" which I expalined in my way is to avoid gaing anohter year old.
In contract, "count down" could be explained as "to celebrate that you gaining another year old?!"
:p
Oh, well. please do not blame me for thinking this way.
